The Return: Cave Of Crystals
This place is only a few kilometres away from a place I went in 1993. Chihuahua, Mexico ! I was about to add it to my Google Maps journey record.
Here is the source of the above images, and the forum thread where I originally heard about these wonders. These are the images that stood out for me here, others show crystals the size of Greek columns, from floor to cave ceiling …. check out the links.
After consulting digg.com, I found that these crystals are now well known, as I hoped. I’m still not sure of the time scale here. Did they take a million years to form as I read somewhere ? Anyway, here is a good article about the discoveries, and the character who appears in the top photo here has a flickr page with full resolution pics of the cave. At least I think it’s him. He is certainly one of the people doing research for the mine company about preserving the find.

New Ideas A Far Cry Away In Game Development ?
As much as I like the look of the new Far Cry 2 and Crysis, I wonder why we’re using these very advanced, highly interesting new engines, to basically, recreate DOOM again, if you think about it. Again ? And again ?
The new Far Cry 2 engine can seamlessly integrate scenes over a virtual 50 km play area … no more loading screens presumably. So using the incredible atmosphere that can be made using the “first person” paradigm, and all of that technology, it should be possible to produce masterpieces of virtual story telling . I haven’t seen all the games out there, but I haven’t really seen anything that does this without resorting to the perma gun model stuck to the front of your view. Don’t get me wrong, I love being destructive ! But I also like exploring and learning new things. An environment could combine story telling, cinematic elements, action, cultural, historical, emotional, artistic and social characteristics that of course would be as engaging as any number of guns and explosions. Think of real life. How often have you been transfixed by a sport, a trek in the hills, a religious experience, learning about a new culture ? Funny, I don’t see any guns involved. Why is the violence/gun angle CONSTANTLY being pushed by these game companies to often very young people. Shouldn’t there be some kind of social responsibility here ? You might say “that doesn’t sell”, but I think you’d be surprised. Market a good game idea properly that doesn’t involve guns, and I think it would be a breath of fresh air to most gamers.

Astronauts, Cosmonauts, Taikonauts and the Naughty Noughties
So Google have released Google Earth Sky, in partnership with NASA and the Space Telescope Science Institute. A wonderful application. It has all the Exoplanets in there and the ability to add markers. What it doesn’t have is the ability to make your own layers, or a proper scale bar, and all sorts of other things, but this is coming.
What better indicator could there be of the age we live in ? The ultimate search engine. Search the Universe ! “We must search the Universe. The purpose….” as the sample in my Black Dog “Heart of Balil” track goes.
Google Earth Sky is actually the commercial version of an idea that I’m trying to develop in my own project. SpaceDataWiki has it’s first file release, a MediaWiki extension. The next goal is to write an add on for NASA World Wind that allows the adding of markers and areas that link to a Wiki page. Eventually these Wiki pages will be read and edited in-line in a style that could be compared to Google Earth Sky. Some might say that Google have made my idea redundant, but I’d disagree. Google is a commercial operation. They provide a very good service, but that’s exactly what it is … a commercial service, although of course it’s a very good one that we know and love. On the other hand we have things like NASA WorldWind that might appear a little dry to the casual Google affectionardo, but that’s because it’s set up for Scientific research rather than casual browsing. There will always be room for an Open Source, free alternative. You might say “Well, Google is free…”, and basically you’d be right, but I’m talking free in terms of being able to alter the code, or allow that code to be included in other projects.
The Google application is an amazing victory for public participation in Space Exploration. In fact this is the whole aim of my Source Forge project … to facilitate participation in exploration for Scientists and non Scientists alike. Although it’s wise not to let the untrained run rampant across your Science project, I would like to see more participation by “lay people” in these projects. It’s from this kind of casual participation that the discoveries of Science are propogated and new generations of Scientists are made.
Our Astronauts, Cosmonauts, Taikonauts and robotic explorers are starting to amass an ocean of new exploration data ( telemetry, images, radio, spectral, and much more). Our information systems need to catch up. The Google Applications are very powerful devices, easily able to overwhelm the unwary digital traveller, but at least they are put together in a way that minimises this risk. It’s something that any traveller should know anyway … if you drive too fast, you might crash. This new problem is no coincidence.
As we come out of the post Cold War era there is much work to do. There are still seemingly intractable problems to deal with like Terrorism, or some situations in Africa, as well as Global Warming and threats to the environement. But I think a new awareness is dawning that the job can be faced realistically and also that it won’t be easy … there are no magic bullets or magic wands. But progress can be made. This comes at a time when the reality of the Space Age is really starting to happen. Predicted since the days when our ancestors first looked up at the skies, now those centuries, if not millennia of work, are coming to fruition.
Frankly we are probably overloaded with Science Fiction and commentary about this event. Maybe I should read more of the classics. But now we need the Sociologists, the Psychologists, the Artists and Musicians to guide us through this huge evolutionary event. I don’t think this can be overestimated. An event that maybe happens only once in a Planets history, never to be repeated again. The last thing I want to see is unnecessary problems because we underestimate the profundity of the situation. Maybe the Naughty nineties will be replaced with the realistic, responsible Elevenses ?

NASA TV ? Now it’s hip to watch ESA TV.
With the upcoming “In The Shadow Of The Moon”, the baby that is the birth of the Space Age is really just starting to scream it’s lungs out. If you thought that things had returned to “normal” (whatever that is) after the Moon mission madness had died down, then you’d be wrong. A thousand innocent eyed youngsters have been bought up believing that all we shot on the Moon were some grainy TV images that any two bit conspiracy theorist could weave into their latest pipe dream. But, for over 35 years there have been hi resolution video tapes sitting in the vaults of NASA, shamefully neglected while the world struggled and wrestled with the end of the Cold War. Now they have been restored to their full camera shaking, revealing terror that is actual real time “Moon Handycam Holiday Snaps” madness.
A similar process is happening with the Space Shuttle Missions and The International Space Station, as well as other missions. Where before, space dreams have been sought out in the labs of Industrial Light and Magic, now we get the real thing. Frankly it’s a shock to see it, for me anyway. The jolt from Hollywood reality to gazing star struck at an astronauts view of the Moon through his video camera is disturbing, in a good way I hope. It makes me realise how claustrophobic some things have become on Planet Earth. Maybe that just reflects my own life, I don’t know. But there is a new awakening happening here.
So it was with a gasp of “at last!” that I found this new ESA video archive. After coping with the high compression of, the brilliant, but restricted NASA TV, it seems that ESA TV are releasing broadcast quality video by FTP, often before it’s broadcast officially by satellite. Their archive also contains full resolution NASA TV clips (still at 320×240 but without the heavy compression).
So fire up that HD Screen, the Universe is on TV … and it’s been waiting for you to watch it … for a long time now.

Postscript: Funny how these things work I was searching high and low for this, and then there it was right after writng the above.
Match Your Orbiter Sim Live to the Shuttle STS-118 Mission
The Orbiter Space Flight Simulator is a piece of completely free software by the very generous Martin Schweiger.
Apart from being able to simulate all sorts of launches and missions both historical and future, even fantasy, my interest at the moment is in it’s ability to make the Shuttle and ISS missions more understandable. With the right tools and add ons it’s possible to follow along a mission “side by side”, right from launch to landing. This is an excellent way to learn about the missions, as things that would normally be confusing immediately become obvious with a simulation to check.
You can see that the view is close to the one showing in mission control.
The telemetry also matches the actual mission. You can see here that the ISS, visible on the NASA TV feed over the Pacific, just coming into the left hand side of the display, matches the virtual tracking simulation.
How is this achieved ?
Realword TLE’s —> Orbiter Scenario Config File.
1. Use eq_to_ecl to convert elements into a format suitable for Orbiter.
2. Convert elements available at http://celestrak.com/NORAD/elements/
3. Only copy 2 lines of elements, plus the title !
4. Remove RPOS & RVEL entries from the scenario file and add the TLE. Copy it in without the title.
5. Put in the Julian Date using this convertor … http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/JulianDate.html.
6. Make sure you put in a Julian Date ( JD ) not a Modified Julian Date ( MJD ) ! The Orbiter date prefix should equal JD.
7. In the Scenario file that I am using I have STS-118 docked to the ISS (just add it to the dock list). Don’t remove the STS-118 entry though, it has all the status of the vessel in there. You don’t have to remove things like RPOS right now as it does’nt seem to effect anything, as long as the craft is docked.
Use other Scenario files to check things if you are unsure. One thing I’m not sure about is the ISS rotation ( AROT) setting. This is the only thing that does not match in my simulation. I’ll add something here when I find this out, or leave me a comment.
Just as an aside, there’s a way to update the Orbiter Scenario file automatically. Here’s something I’m working on. I’m using Lynx (for my OS it’s the Win32 version ), and Sed (I’m using the Dos version ).
This command line will give only the element lines you need (between the two search terms ISS and SOYUZ).
> lynx -dump http://celestrak.com/NORAD/elements/stations.txt | sed -n ‘/ISS/,/SOYUZ/p’ > file_to_give_to_eq_to_ecl.txt
I just need to write something that will edit the Orbiter Scenario file.
On another Blog I will discuss how to do this for other missions and solar system bodies, like the Cassini mission. I have not done this yet, but I think it involves taking elements from the Horizons project. I also need to cover how to do a live launch using the PEG Autopilot add on.

Year Zero
I’ve rediscovered Jungian Psychology. In 1919 Jung put forward his theory of the Subconscious. You’d think by now some of it might have begun to sink in. Around the same time Einstein was formulating his equations. It seems we get to hear about E = MC² but I’m hearing the mention of Jung and Archetypes much less now than I used to. What is going on ?
I feel this terrible restlessness. There is a rush to get into space, to settle Mars. Not that we’ve only just got to the point that we can see what we’re doing with the technological exploration of space after millions of years of looking up at the stars and wondering.
But that kind of reflective “I’m a part of a trillion year historical process” outlook seems shockingly absent from many of our endeavours today. Was it the end of the Cold War that did it ? Was “time reset” in about 1992 ?
I wonder if this is really very serious actually. Where are we heading ? I see many people actively avoiding their subconscious , just like they avoid looking back at history and our place in it. In Jungian Psychology this is very dangerous. You can end up becoming this lonely, disconnected individual, bobbing around on an Ocean of the Subconscious. But with a rounded, open, healthy Jungian outlook though … you BECOME the Ocean.
I wonder what will happen the more this kind of denial goes on. I don’t like predicting disasters, but there is at least a danger here. With the huge pressures of our times. Space exploration, an ever more connected “Global Village”. Serious problems to attend to like Darfur, or Poverty, Climate Change. This put’s an ever increasing pressure on that little man in the boat. The more he denies that Ocean the more likely it is to rise up in revolt and swamp him in unfaced psychological material.
The last thing I want is for some of the incredibly positive things that are happening now to be swamped by some stupid inability to look at a Science that has been finely honed in the last 90 years (or 9000 as Jung might argue ). I hear so much about our great Science. It’s ability to put man in space. How soon we will cure Cancer or Aids ? Now we are decoding DNA… but where… where ?! My dear fellow human beings, is the debate about our MINDS and what is going on with them at the moment ?
