The Men in Blue
( A low gravity flight test, NASA TV. If anyone can tell me the name of the presenter there ? )
I went out to the hazel wood,
Because a fire was in my head,
And cut and peeled a hazel wand,
And hooked a berry to a thread;
And when white moths were on the wing,
And moth-like stars were flickering out,
I dropped the berry in a stream
And caught a little silver trout.
When I had laid it on the floor
I turned to blow the fire aflame,
But something rustled on the floor,
And some one called me by my name:
It had become a glimmering girl
With apple blossom in her hair
Who called me by my name and ran
And faded through the brightening air.
Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lands and hilly lands,
I will find out where she has gone,
And kiss her lips and take her hands;
And walk among long dappled grass,
And pluck till time and times are done
The silver apples of the moon,
The golden apples of the sun.
The Song of the Wandering Angus, William Butler Yeats.
This poem makes up a central part of the story told in ST:Enterprise “Rogue Planet“, actually as part of a first contact scenario. The episode concerns a shape shifting life form that appears to the Captain as a beautiful woman, not unlike that fish that turns into a girl in the poem.
( “Wraith” life-form )
( “Wraith” life-from in shifted state. )
After Captain Archer has helped it, the life-from speaks to him … “Never stop seeking the seemingly unobtainable”. A tacit reference to the coming birth of Star Fleet in the Star Trek Universe ? Anyway, that line has some resonances for me as well. Many years ago I had a dream where, at the same time as fighting personal problems in my life, I was filing into and lining up in a room with many people. Next to me was a woman I had just met. We were all wearing blue uniforms, and were gathering to listen to some introduction or speech. Blue uniforms ? It can only be NASA.
Now I find myself working on NASA World Wind projects. Almost working in an unofficial, volunteer function for NASA. Of course, I could easily end up working for ESA or some other Space Agency, but I seem to remember that ESA Astronauts put on that same blue wear.
“Never stop seeking…” ? I’ve heard some of the Astronauts on the ISS, like Clay Anderson, say very similar things. “Never give up on your dream.”. Of course that’s how some of them got up there. They never gave up on following their dream. This just makes me even more sure of the value of the International Space Station. I’ve had to stop reading some people’s forum posts about “…that’s why the ISS was sold”, or it “doesn’t do any real science”. Apart from the fact that the ISS has been churning out “real Science” for years and will continue to do so (every bolt that holds it together holds whole archives of Scientific engineering miracles, for example), it continues to be a huge beacon of hope for millions on Planet Earth. For the first time, after millions of years of evolution, we have an outpost in Space, and it’s not going to stop now. A symbol of what can be achieved by people not willing to give up their dreams. Not willing to give into the Cynicism that says “…you have to be realistic, put your dream to one side”. These people didn’t listen to that, and look what happened.

Sailing the Seas of Change
Listen ( www.sky.fm ) to some of those 80’s pop hits and do you notice something ? A melody ? The driving anthems of Duran Duran ? The clever pop stories of Eurythmics ?
The 80’s was when I was a teenager. The 80’s did’nt seem freer and more open because I was a teenager, they were freer and more open. Why ? Thatcher’ism mate.
I’ve had my Politics all arse over backwards. You see, Labour and Socialism want to “make life better” by controlling people through big government. Look at Gordon Browns control freak rule over the treasury. The endless laws and “guidelines”. The microscopic control of the way people do things. Slowly demoralising them because they are never allowed to take control themselves. Never allowed to make things the way they know they should be because they are the one’s in the field, so to speak. Look at the failures of government we have seen recently. Badly released asylum seeker figures. Northern Rock. The bottom falling out of the whole thing with the loss of child benefit data.
It’s all the wrong way round ! The Conservatives … the “Right Wing” put power back into the hands of the individual. They can see that big government does not work. People don’t respond well to being forced to do things. Let people be free and there is usually a drift towards an Egalitarian, open culture. Look at Linux. The Left Wing, Socialist control freaks thought that opening code bases would lead to a “digital anarchy”. Now we know that although it is sometimes easier for the minority to exploit an open system of development, overall, people cooperate and something wonderful is produced. The same with Wikipedia. Sometimes, like Linux, mistaken for a “Socialist Experiment”. Actually it is in line with Thatcherism (I wonder if she knows about Wikipedia… there’s a thought!).
So what was that about the “Greedy 80’s” ? Isn’t that a term made up by scrooge like Left’ists who assume that as soon as anyone has some real freedom that they will all run off and start back stabbing and manipulating one another. Hoarding all their profits at the expense of everyone. What a sad assumption about human behaviour ! Of course, there is a dark side. With more freedom comes more responsibility, and maybe a few people willing to exploit that freedom, but at least that will be out in the open.
I’m with Phil Hendrie. I think we are seeing a massive failure of the Left. The have been setting themselves up for years as “anti war”, the “nice guys”. The right Wing were greedy back stabbing bastards. You couldn’t trust them. The Left would protect us from the Right. The abberration to all this is Tony Blair. While leaving Gordon Brown to pump out the real Labour machinery, he did what any good leader does, regardless of his party. He took control of maybe the most serious situation that we’ve faced since the beginning of the Cold War in 1945. The War on Terror. So, after at first being dead against good ‘ol guitar strumming Tony, now I think I owe him an apology of sorts. He pulled of the impossible in the face of oppositions from the Country and his Party ! So take a puff on that pipe, Bob!
So the tide is turning. I had my 80’s heaven and then my 90’s hell. I don’t think that was any coincidence in Political terms. The hash pipe smoking “peace loving” hippie left wingers have been telling us that the far right is taking over since 911, while that right fight the WOT and given us the option of a less controlling government.
So turn the tables. Turn that egg timer up the other way. Stand on your head! It’s all been the wrong way round !

NASA World Wind Evolves into Something Extraordinary
Hey, my project is online ! After much learning of Linux bash commands, CGI and mySQL, I can now serve out a NASA World Wind layer made up of the exact Mars Global Surveyor images that you want. From about the year 2000 to the end of the MGS mission I explored various MGS images. I was a remote explorer on Mars. Looking at some of the most alien landscapes I’ve ever seen, and yet finding some that were hauntingly familiar. Now I can see where all those images were that I was looking at…
Now, this is getting quite interesting in terms of Mars exploration. Already international plans are in operation to return to the Moon. Via the ISS … to construct a Moon Base. That base will one day take us on to Mars. I should really do some stuff for the Moon as well as that is where the action will be soon. Anyway, all in good time. The point with World Wind though is that it is being used to simulate and display very accurate Scientific data. I’m beginning to think of it like Seven of Nine’s Astro Metrics Lab in Star Trek Voyager . Of course this is exactly what it is ! Maybe someone already has it running on a wrap around (what’s the name?) screen as big as your wall ? Anyway, with all this accurate data the next incarnation of World Wind is written in Java. Not only that, it is extensible. It’s easy to write complex add ons for it, way beyond the capabilities of current ones (good as those are!). But forget all those clunky, slow Java apps you’ve used on the web before. This thing downloads fast and can cut it with some of the latest game/sim engines out there by the look of it …
As long as you have Java installed properly then click on the link further down this page and the entire NASA World Wind / DiSTI F16 application will load. It’s not a browser plugin but a separate application. It took me a while to get the vid above. I had to get the hang of the f16 first
.
So can you imagine this ? I’m thinking entire, accurate, first person environments of the International Space Station coupled with the Scientific analysis data of World Wind. What do all the aspects of Earth’s atmosphere look like from the ISS ? Maybe from that point of view the data looks kinda different ?
What about a Moon Buggy you can drive ? So you can see all that Moon data from the POV of future Moon Base dwellers ? A Mars Buggy would be nice as well.
Maybe I’m letting my video game interests get the better of me. After all the F16 demo is meant to show the possibilities that World Wind now provides, not how it can compete with the latest games. A lot of Scientific data does depend on how it is presented though. For example from an educational perspective a few printed graphs are not going to hold the attention of a class for as long as something running in World Wind. Could all this be a way to capture the attention of the “video game generation” ? To pull them out of their perma PS2 wars into the REAL world of Moon bases and future Mars, Earth ?

I’m a Changin’ Brother
( Desmond … on “the other side” , Lost Season 3, Episode 4 )
I made an anti-war post not along ago. I think my heart was in the right place, but my target was really me I suspect. I’ve been listening to the Phil Hendrie show from the USA. Now, Phil is a bit difficult to explain to the uninitiated, especially if you’ve never really set foot outside the UK (intellectually as well as physically). Let’s put it this way, if you haven’t done some livin’ then you might be confused. If you think “political correctness” is a good thing then you’re just going to end up punching your speakers in.
Maybe telling part of my life history is in order here. In 1992 I had a tragedy in my life that, for a while, infected my reasoning. I found myself going on this crazy, mad cosmic trip that included thinking that objects on Mars were put there by extraterrestrial intelligences. I started listening to the Art Bell show and actually believing some of the “Guests” on there (of course, without doing any of the background checks I should have been doing). All fine and dandy maybe. Maybe I was just working through my anguish in my own peculiar way. Unfortunately I ran across a con man in the process. The very dangerous and to be avoided Mr Richard C Hoagland. I bought his book, I was taken in by his ideas. His followers started grooming me. I was being taken in by a Cult ! But then, somehow I ran across the Phil Hendrie show (at least, as it used to be back then). I found myself literally almost rupturing intestines, rolling on the floor at his wicked radio sketches that revealed Art Bell (actually he’s less harmless) and especially YOU KNOW WHO as the doddering old maniacs that they really are. Phil saved me. It’s true ! Thankyou Phil !
I could have suffered a fate worse than death. I was heading into “the darkside”. That place where there are no minds. No critical analysis is allowed, and if you bother someone with the facts then you are “right wing”, or “pro war”, or “a Nazi”. No, it’s those people who are Nazi’s, or at least heading in that direction I’m afraid. But, of course I thought I was on “the good side”, that Bush and Blair were an NWO plot to enslave us all. The whole world was against me, and there were plenty of people willing to tell me that I was joining the Angels.
I still have my differences with Bush, Blair and whoever else, always will have. That’s the way it should be. But I think Bush is doing his job as US President. Tony Blair was acting on what the intelligence services were telling him. I was just listening to a couple of intellectuals on BBC Radio 4. Apparently the “Mission Accomplished” speech he did on board that ship .. “haunts him” (and don’t know how you’d know such a thing about this man). Apparently we are “learning the lessons that the Roman Empire learnt”. Esqueeze me ? When I last checked the Roman Empire subjugated Europe. Crucified people and entertained their people with daily slaughters in the Arena. To make such a comparison while soldiers fight on in Afghanistan to protect us from people who have bombed and maimed in our cities just seems so unhinged from reality I wonder who those people are. Or do I ? Because I was in that place just over a year and a half ago. Look back in my blog. You will find the same flawed conspiracy theory that some (actually I think they are a minority) are blasting around waiting for any poor schmuck, too confused to know the difference, to pick up on. Maybe I shouldn’t make the comparison. Afterall people are driven by a whole constellation of things, but I think there are comminalities. We’re all human. But when I was believing these strange philosophies, I was was messed up in all sorts of ways. That’s why Phil Hendrie and his ilk are so important. They don’t “attack” people, they get through to people with what I believe to be one of the most potent forces on our side … humour.

And The Next Steven Seagal Blockbuster Will Be
First I saw On Deadly Ground and then it was Under Siege. I was just watching Under Siege 2: Dark Territory. Amazing, fun, Hollywood schmultz really, with Seagal in his usual hard guy role. Is he a character actor ? Is he playing himself ? Who cares ? The point always seemed to be that he really did start off his life as a Martial Arts expert and a bodyguard, rather than being the usual actor who is trained for the part.
On Deadly Ground focuses on a corrupt, polluting oil company. Fire Down Below investigates a mining company destroying a local community and how that community fights back. The Patriot follows the story of a “local doctor and former government research immunologist Wesley McClaren, who has an interest in herbal medicine and is also a weapons and self-defense expert”. Those last two I’ve yet to see.
I had a revelation. We’ve got the plot of one of these Seagal movies playing out right under our noses. I just wish I could find the same humour in that story as I can in the Seagal movies. It must be there somewhere. The following images are from a United Kingdom Channel 4 comedy show…

“Daddy pleeeeease can I have a chocolate!”
Aw, come here then!
Unfortunately people really are dying and being abused and it’s hard to laugh along with that, unless it’s through a glass darkly. At Columbine, teenager’s driven by prescription “anti-depressants” arrived at school with guns and calmly started killing their class mates.
“Harris was prescribed the anti-depressant Zoloft by his family doctor. Shortly afterwards, Harris reported having suicidal and homicidal thoughts.[32] Harris was then switched to a similar drug Luvox. At the time of his death, Harris had therapeutic Luvox levels in his serum. Some analysts, such as psychiatrist Peter Breggin, have argued that one or both of these medications may have contributed to Harris’ actions. It has been claimed that side-effects of these drugs include increased aggression, loss of remorse, depersonalization and mania.[33]” (quoted from the Wikipedia article)
That was not an isolated incident. It’s hardly obscure or controversial either. We’ve all seen the headlines about Pharmaceuticals causing deaths and sufferring.
So with no further ado, here it is. This is my humble request to the legend that is Steven Seagal…
Begin Script Synopsis.
Copyright Barney M Holmes, 2007.
(Note: This is a skeleton script and will be fleshed out over time).
Retired Special Ops instructor xxxx played by Steven Seagal is visiting his daughter at her school where she is a teacher. He is there with friends to watch a play she has been rehearsing with the children.
The scene is interrupted by screaming and gunfire. xxxx creeps up on the gun wielding attackers. He knocks down two of them but is forced to kill another in self defence. He turns over the body and is horrified to find that he has killed a young teenager.
Although his daughter is safe, he is shaken by this incident. Pulling in some old favours he finds out that the gun wielding teenagers have all been forced to take “anti-depressants” prior to the incident. Experts assure him that there is no problem, and that “if they were on anti-depressants they must have been unstable anyway”. Still shaken from the death of the teenager that he killed he takes a holiday in Hawaii to recover. In this contrasting paradise setting, he runs across a parent who’s son was involved in a similar incident at another school in the USA. She puts him on contact with an underground organisation. Through them he discovers that the drugs are being supplied by a chemical company with Pharmaceutical interests. The drugs on the market are being fraudulently sold. the FDA is actually being supplied with false samples for testing. The company can make millions by causing extreme side effects that can be treated with more of their “medications”.
After finding that some members of the FDA have been bribed he links up with an FBI operation investigating huge Mafia run corruption and money laundering using the Pharmaceutical industry as a front.
After the FBI team examines the evidence that xxxx provides along with their own, they convince a judge that the operation has become what in the military is called “a clear and present danger”. xxxx and the FBI team are possibly in danger of being detected by that “clear and present danger”. Their only hope is to carry out a strike operation that will sweep into one of the Pharmaceutical factories to seize samples and information so they can prove to the FDA that the operation is fraudulent.
With increasing rumours that some very serious mafia interests have caught wind of their operation, military expertise is bought onto the team. xxxx begins working with some of his old Special Ops team.
The scene is set. In a remote location where the Pharmaceutical factory is, a Moller Jet car comes into land. It’s a “company exec”, supposedly on a efficiency drive visit. So why does a Humvee turn up as well ? A large, unmarked truck ? Why is the factory security so over armed ?
In the ensuing battle one of the security guard dogs … obviously mistreated in some way … turns on one of the guards when he’s got xxxx in a sticky position.
Now, with a few suspects arrested and some evidence the investigation seems sure to make some headway. In Hawaii though, the woman who xxxx spoke to was actually under FBI protection. Although this was not mentioned to xxxx for security reasons. (In the scene where they first meet, eagle eyed movie goer’s may spot some covert activity going on in the background). Her guards are attacked. Two killed, one wounded. She is then, supposedly, “diagnosed” with an aggravated condition set off by the stress of the attack and put in a local private “clinic”. The FBI team are assured she is under treatment and she will be soon released for their investigation. But the team get to hear that she’s having the very same “medications” forced upon her that they are fighting ! If action is not taken soon she could suffer irreparable memory loss and one of their prime witnesses will be lost.
The team move in. Again this clinic has a “security team” that seems massively over armed for what makes itself out as some kind of “health clinic”. The team move in and rescue the woman, and liberate a few “patients” along the way.
Now accusations are made against the FBI team on a high level. They are “murderers”, “renegades running amuck” and authorities are urged to arrest them ! Before that can be done though the Judge they originally went to, is shocked by the evidence he sees. He goes to the highest levels and a court case is arranged. Over the next few months the country is shocked by the revelations that this case reveals. In connected cases, further arrests are made. Mafia kings fall. Doctors lose their licenses. the Pharmaceutical company they attacked goes bust, and the FDA begins real trials this time, with the actual chemicals in their hands.
The final scene is of the woman from Hawaii they rescued who has somehow been matched up with the Security dog from the factory raid. The patient is seen struggling with the after effects of even the small amount of “medication” she was given. As the camera pans around xxxx is seen walking up her garden path in Hawaii, the dog running down the path to meet him.
The End.

This is Not a Game
(Brother in Arms: Earned in Blood, PC)
I bought this as part of a video game deal not really knowing much about it, but I’ve always been curious about these video game recreations of WW2 battles. Maybe I hadn’t shelled out before because I felt vaguely guilty about spending my time exploring humbling historical experiences in something as frivolous as a video game. I seem to have hit gold though. The producers of this game have been well aware of the touchy subject and awesome responsibility of documenting real life accounts in a medium that could quickly become crass. With historical advisor’s and location scouting more worthy of a movie production, this game has finally edged my acceptance counter into this medium being able to cut it along with the more established film industry.
I wasn’t expecting a shooter that I could run around in and impress my friends with, and, sure enough, that’s not what I got, thank God. Actually, I seem to have found what I was looking for. Scene setting. Atmosphere. Well thought out dialogue. Facial animation and characters so well done that they were moving in a way I’ve never seen in a “game” before. I’ve seen Saving Private Ryan, but frankly this seemed far more like an utterly humbling crash course in what you will never learn watching a thousand war films. I like some of what Spielberg does, but Ryan seemed more like an exercise in churning out the Spielberg “touch” than a heartfelt production. I preferred Schindlers List. The master, documentary style, WW2 film of them all is “The Longest Day” which is absolutely essential viewing for anyone interested in this area. It’s a film with a message that doesn’t need over intense battle scenes of ultra sentimentality to tell, and it’s all the more powerful because of that. The Longest Day is thankfully free of the ultra violence that ruined Saving Private Ryan in my opinion. Do we really need to see the horror and the gore to know it’s there ? Replaying it over and over like those old reels of concentration camp atrocities. That’s just desensitising. The audience leaves thinking they’ve had an “experience” when really they’re just numbed. Earned in Blood certainly has it’s share of explosions and, well .. blood, but the producers seemed to have pulled off the impossible in my opinion. How to market a game to the video industry exec’s who just want to sell the latest big virtual guns to teenagers … and make a proper historical recreation as well.
All this, and after playing for a while I turned on BBC Radio 4 to hear some “schmuck” telling us that the allies fought the Second World War only for strategic interests, not morals. Wow. It just adds more fire to the ever growing blaze of my current pet theory (woof!) … that actually the world is only just coming to terms with what happened over 60 years ago. Somehow we think that wars stop on the day victory is declared. Their effects echo down the centuries.
As I look at the current International Space Station Mission, or watch as world affairs sort themselves out after the end of the Cold War, I begin to realise what all those battles were about back there.
