The Monoculture of the Mind

Think of those swaying fields of corn, or entire chunks of a country devoted to Beef production. Entire areas handed over to the production of one food, and one alone. It’s putting all your eggs in one basket. I learnt this in “O” Level Geography over 20 years ago ! You don’t cultivate one crop alone, because if that fails then you have nothing.

Yet this is what seems to be happening in some people’s minds. It spreads through society like Shopping Centers and that quaint philosophy “that we are alone in the Universe”. Or the assumption that “there is no cure for Cancer”. As Mike Adams points out 1 you can look at any medical system in the world, and you will find numerous, ancient treatments for Cancer. Before we get into an endless regress of “oh, that’s not proven”, ,or ,”they are unscientific”, ad nauseum, ask yourself this. Are YOU sure that you have command of your own mind ?

Just look at that other kettle of fish (crock of shite? Anyway), called “SETI”. UFO’s, Ancient Astronauts, you know the kind of thing. I get the feeling that Earth and the surrounding Galactic Neighbourhood is swarming with many different life forms, maybe some of them like us. But just like the “there is no cure for Cancer” Monoculture ( …“monomind”), we have been brainwashed into shutting down our God given common sense and repeat this idiocy to anyone we can find, at any chance we can get.

It’s an infective vector. A virilent Meme. A veritable outbreak of one thing repeated many times … Monoculture.

But just like T Cells, or White Blood Cells that can fight a disease in the body, in the realm of the Mind, it is symbols and words, ideas, that act as Antibodies. That’s all it takes. The monoculture is a fragile entity. Give it diversity and intelligent ideas that breed new intelligent ideas and it doesn’t know what to do.

Maybe we should try an experiment. Cleanse our minds of all those assumptions and “known facts”. THEN go looking for Aliens. My guess is that we would find them, and find they’ve been there all along.

The same with Health. All those diseases and ailments that people shuffle around with. Again, ease that mind. Maybe the “impossible” is true and your “killer” disease can be cured. Suddenly the Tiger is a little fluffy pussycat.

Crysis: From Silent to Talkies ?

This game has confused me. Don’t get me wrong. It has outstanding design, direction, voice acting … you name it. The works. But more of a phenomenon, in my opinion, is the cultural noise surrounding it. From the obsessive discussion of hardware profiles, to the obvious fury when it doesn’t run properly (believe me, get a console. PC users are used to this !). Right down to the strange forum messages that this game seems to breed. I’ve seen it all. Youtube slang. Forum flame wars, and identity masquerading (“Sock Puppets”). The inability to listen or follow any social rules at all. Ha! Ha! Anyone would think the “virtual” internet has as much social variety as the “Real World” ™. But some of it is just plain peculiar. Why rush through playing this uber production we call Crysis, only to say “it sucks”, because you couldn’t find a particular weapon ? I’m not going to say that some of these messages come from very young people. I’ve found that even the youngest can appreciate the amount of work that has gone into something.

I think what we’re talking about is “identity theft” ! Where is the personality of some people on these forums ? I don’t want to single people out. In fact I prefer the creative chaos of many boards as opposed to the “fenced off” ultra security of some forums, where you daren’t break wind in case you have your account suspended.

But personality ?

So many of these messages sound like they are from the same person ! Could a few people be afraid to express themselves, because it can so often turn into …” LOL. You’re retarded. It’s obvious. Yadda Yadda.”. Who even wants to talk to these people ? So they never have a proper engaging conversation. So they never find out. Catch 22 ?

So I find it quite revealing that this kind of behaviour seems to surround Crysis. Are we talking about some envy going on here ? Maybe. I think overall though Crysis has caused quite a stir and what we’re seeing is a lot of social thrashing around. Hey, thrashing can be good !

I’ve been doing my own. I could hardly take in some parts of Crysis because I was constantly picking out the symbols and film references . I’ll play it again at some point. Presumably younger players weren’t handicapped by this awareness ! Oh. Ignorance is Bliss ! Talking of which. The Matrix. Crysis is similar in some respects. It at first appears to be original. Then you uncover the mish mash of influences, nicked ideas, glaring plagiarism. Then you realise it’s all fused into something new anyway. Some of the Aliens even look like creatures from “Machine City”. The characters have Biblical names, as do the various acts (?), of the game.

Martin Lancaster at Crytek is one of the writers, and seems to have done some kind of Media / Film Studies course, at least according to my research. It shows. From the aforementioned Matrix, to The Abyss, to Quatermass, and many others. There’s even the movie “Contact” in there at one point. As the nuclear strike hits the island, we’re there on the bridge of that Contact ship looking at an imminent Alien response.

In fact that’s what Crysis IS. A bodged Alien Contact attempt. Wouldn’t you get a bit edgy watching, well, another load of aliens setting up military camps around you and giving you ample proof of how war like they are ! Who can blame them really. Earth invasion my ass !

Yes, it’s B-Movie. Hey, B-Movie’s are good ! Ya know … Fun ? If I read one more sophomoric review of Crysis on the net, or comment for that matter, I’m going to have to go into Ego Deflating Nano Suit mode and start throwing people around, so you have been warned.

So the Crysis story is hardly going to be an exercise in the writing of Shakespeare. Video games have developed their own language over the years. From the original Arcade Classics, to Doom, Heretic, Quake, Unreal, and onwards. The trend has been to, once the real-time engine was basically refined, to add more and more “movie like” … read “scripted“… aspects. This is beginning to write it’s own rules. Look at the way a Crysis cut scene flows seamlessly in and out of the gameplay. Sometimes all there is there to tell you it’s a “cut scene” is a letter boxed screen, and that’s it ! Maybe a title.

The point I’m trying to make is that these video games, although technologically advanced have simply not had time to develop their own language to the level of sophistication of the Movie industry. The skill of some film photographers and editors is way out there. It’s not always discussed because we just want to watch the film. But there’s a fearsome amount going on there. All those subtle ways of editing, cutting, dialogue. The whole feel of the thing that comes together to tell a good story. There’s a whole language there that video games can borrow from. But why does the video game even have to ape up to it’s big brother .. the Movie Industry ? Even if revenues rival it ? Don’t they both do very different things, very well ? I don’t think video games will become “the new films”. I think that’s nonsense. But I could be wrong.

Video games have always been about the visceral experience. Reactions. Instincts. I don’t know what it is about Crysis. I suspect the “it’s like a film” analogy is off the mark. Sure, there’s acting, and dialog. An aspect that seems to have suddenly gone from the equivalent of the silent movie, to an actual “video game talkie” in this case ! But I think it would be a mistake to over extend this game / movie comparison. Creations like Crysis can do things that no film will ever do, and vice versa. I hope to see completely new ways of doing things, instead of this “it’s like that or this” mentality. This is, after all, the Twenty First Century.

The iPod Matrix Revealed

Armed with iPods, I sidled along last week to Apple Inc headquarters in Cupertino, California, for a meeting with the (infamous?) Steve Jobs.

After shaking hands and exchanging the latest geek codes (what?) … we settled down to an interesting discussion.

I showed him some of the more famous gadgets inspired by his iPod empire…

Steve: “Well, you know. We pride ourselves on inspiring the latest cutting edge innovation. We spent a long time developing the iPod empire and enjoy handing down the benefits to other companies.”

Does Steve think that that hype has overtaken the product ?

Steve: “To a certain extent, you may have a point. Sometimes I have to calm my people down in marketing. The get delusions of grandeur you know. They say to me ….’We dream about iPods’ …. ‘We brainstorm about them all day!’.

So where can the iPod be taken now. An iPod in every home ?

Steve: “We think we can go one better. We’ve covered every type of furniture and peripheral know to man. Beds, chairs, the lot. We thought ‘This is getting ridiculous’….”We have to do something!’”

I quite agree. Reduce the hype ? Move onto another product ?

Steve: “No! Listen. We can cut out all that hype. We thought … ‘iPods are being installed everywhere’ … ‘except one place’….”

Er… The Space Shuttle ?

Steve: “No! Us, of course, you dummy. Don’t you see ? The human body contains the Ear, the Chochlea … the very target of our business. We thought why not make a package for pregnant mothers. Surgically install a port at the back of the head, at birth. Either plugin the iPod, or we’ve considered a wireless network.”

Er. Steve. Have you ever seen The Matrix ?

Steve: “Yes! You’ve got it! That’s exactly what I’m talking about. People already walk around in a fog of music. In the street. On the Train. No one listens to one another any more, or even have conversations. They’re too busy listening.”

Steve wanted to talk more to me, but had to move on to other pressing matters.

So there it is. Are we moving into a world of perma music ? No need any more to use that pesky imagination (yawn). Just aim the right activating thought at the iPod implant and away we go … simple !

The Sun is there, so why don’t we Use it ?

In my lets – stop – hand – wringing – over – the – environment – and – get – on – with – things series, I’ve hit Gold in them there hills again.

pipe_282x500.jpg

( Put this in your pipe and smoke it. )

Remember playing with a Magnifine Glass and the Sun as a kid ? The effortless way of making fire from the sky was always an eye opener to me into how reality is setup to provide us with everything … if only we can remove our blinkers of confusion.

This Slashdot article caught my eye. I still don’t get where the molten salt fits in, but the principle is sound. Take that Magnifine Glass to a much bigger scale and you have an instant Power Station using exactly the same principles as a Nuclear or Gas/ Coal station. Use heat to turn water into steam and run a turbine.

The ridiculous argument in the article linked from Slashdot that raised my heckles a little was the suggestion that these Power Stations could not be distributed because they would rely on being in countries like Morroco. Eh ? I’m sure a few North African countries (in the case of Europe) wouldn’t mind adding power generation revenues to their economies. Why not build them like Oil Rigs in the Med ? What about the far North, when at some times of the year the Sun shines for months at a time ?

You see, you really can get a free lunch, it’s true !
