Installing latest SVN Gimp in Ubuntu

In order to be able to use single window mode it’s necessary to install the latest development build of Gimp. However this requires installation of some possibly unstable packages that are still in testing. Bear in mind that this version of Gimp may be unstable as well (you may lost work if you don’t save often).

But for Gimp freaks like me this is worth risking just to check out the awesomeness that is the current Gimp development !

First you will need to install this PPA (Personal Package Manager) …

Matt Walker: PPA named mrw-gimp-svn for matthaeus123

Open up the terminal and enter …

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:matthaeus123/mrw-gimp-svn

Then you will need the various libraries that this version of Gimp requires. As this is a recent development version of Gimp these libraries are not available from the usual sources.

sudo add-apt-repository "deb oneiric main"

sudo add-apt-repository "deb oneiric main"

Then …

sudo apt-get update

Now run Update Manager to install all the updates, and then …

sudo apt-get install gimp

You should now be able to run the latest Gimp.
