SETI: Moving forward the Copernican Revolution

Little Green Men

Nicolaus Copernicus (German: Nikolaus Kopernikus; Italian: Nicolò Copernico; Polish: Mikołaj Kopernik; in his youth, Niclas Koppernigk;[1] 19 February 1473 – 24 May 1543) was a Renaissance astronomer and the first person to formulate a comprehensive heliocentric cosmology which displaced the Earth from the center of the universe.[2]

300 years ago the view that Earth was at the center of the Solar System or Universe was overturned. Or was it ? It’s as if the message never quite got through. We still live in a world that is incredibly Earth centric. The major Science theories all tie the evolution of life solely back to the Earth. We are still sending rovers to Mars looking for water and organisms. We still look up at the sky and exclaim “is anyone out there?”. This is absurd.

For a start there is persuasive evidence that we are constantly bombarded with life from space. Then there is the Conscious Universe exposed by Quantum Physics that shows that our consciousness is intimately tied into a Universal Consciousness. “Religion / Science Wars” and the “God is Dead” camp distract from the mountains of experiments and theories that show that reality and matter is full of a conscious energy, especially at subatomic levels; Quantum Enigma: Physics Encounters Consciousness, Bruce Rosenblum & Fred Kuttner. There are many other works out there. You might not call it “God” but the conclusion is obvious. We are still in a Copernican revolution that is creating blockade runners sneaking through the imaginary barrier that separates “us” and the Earth from the rest of the Universe. The implications are way beyond what many were once willing to consider. If this state of affairs has existed throughout history – I would say it has – then we have to radically change the way we contextualise our view of Earth. The Physics from the bottom up shows an alive and conscious Universe of which Earth has always been a part. Ancient Civilisations have always been aware of this. It’s not so much “who is out here?” but a case of our vision having been precluded away from the possibilities. All the themes of Science Fiction become possible. Could there be other human outposts out there ? In the Solar System ? In the Galaxy ? Believing ourselves to be isolated on Earth is just silly in the face of the evidence.

Another angle on this. The New Age. As equally hated and loved, those belief systems have always been shuffled off the stage to be replaced by “serious” Science. This while an over hundred year history of Parapsychological researchers have patiently proved that something is Scientific here. One could start with Radins’ The Conscious Universe. There are many other works out there that show that we are capable of much more than we have imagined. The East has always been aware of this, from Sri Aurobindo taking journeys out of his body under instruction of his Master, and then returning, to all the other practices filed under “belief systems” or “folk wisdom”. We have been in the absurd position of SETI scanning Galactic radio frequencies “looking for life” (as good as that is SETI@Home people!) while we ignore tales of psychic contact with intergalactic civilisations by The Dogon, as well as people who claim to talk with the Pleiadians, and of course the long history of UFO sightings and contactees. This entire history is closely related to a continuing Copernicus Revolution that is placing Earth in her proper Galactic context. The walls are coming down. The intellectual exclusion zone is evaporating. Blockade runners are becoming todays explorers and finding that far from this being “is life out there?”, this is a case of “where is life NOT out there?”. We are sitting right in the middle of an entire intelligent entity itself … The Universe. In that context how long can it be before our blinders fall off and we find the Galactic civilisations that we are looking for ?
